THANKYOU! Local MP Michelle Donelan dropped into Melksham on Friday to sign letters to all the volunteers that came forward and provided such fantastic support to those residents that required help with shopping, collecting prescriptions, delivering food bank parcels, walking dogs and just providing a friendly voice to chat to at the end of a phone; whether they were shielding or self isolating.
Volunteers have been providing this support since March and the whole community joins in sending them our gratitude. We don't know what the future weeks will bring to the Melksham area, but what is clear is that there will be a continuing need for those residents that do not have a support network locally. If you would like to volunteer then please get in touch melkshamcommunity.co.uk/offer-help/ if you require help (or are offering to help) then the number is still 01225 809265.

We are 100 days into #Lockdown and today have shared some of the amazing achievement of the Melksham Community Support project.

Quite rightly much praise has been given to the 444 wonderful volunteers who have done so much to make it all happen.

But in this last post looking back at the last 100 days I would like to focus on the core team who have been instrumental in delivering Melksham Community Support.

Frankly there are not adequate words to express just how special these people are - to be taken out of your day job and put onto the front line answering calls from, what were often, scared and distressed people, or being asked to plan the delivery of prescriptions, find volunteers for shopping or simply spend time on the phone to someone assuring them that somehow it will all work out and be okay must have been a difficult and challenging experience.

#
In the early days of the project, the team were working 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. As the demand on our services has reduced, as #Lockdown starts to ease, these staff have been returning to undertaking the duties of their normal day jobs, whilst keeping the service running effectively and efficiently.

It’s been an honour to be part of this incredible team and as we further develop the service, and turn it into some sustainable and long term, I look forward to continuing to be being part of this incredible effort.

So, Linda, Teresa, Patsy, Lorraine, Tim, Taylor, Alex, Marianne, Bruce, David, Kevin, Mel and Miriam – THANK YOU. Thank you so much – you will never truly know how amazing what you have all done, and are continuing to do, is and what a difference you have made to people’s lives.

100 days of being trapped in your home, on your own, with no-one to talk to is not something any of us would want to see.

That's why we are so grateful to the amazing people who have been delivering our friendly phone calls. For many volunteers this has been a great experience and new friendships have started and blossomed.

For other though, the emotional cost of helping others in this way has been hard, and we are so incredibly grateful for what you have all done.

All outpatients and visitors to the RUH will be asked to wear a face covering at all times from Monday 15 June. 😷

The move, which is in line with other hospitals in England, follows a direction from the Department of Health and Social Care to help reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus.

So, if you’re going to be coming to the RUH from Monday, please plan ahead and bring a face covering with you. If you are unable to bring your own, we can provide one for you when you enter the hospital. 🏥

Face coverings can be purchased commercially or handmade, should cover the nose, mouth and chin and be secured with elastic loops or ties, include multiple layers, be washable and reusable. You can find information about how to wear and make a face covering here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/how-to-wear-and-make-a-cloth-face-covering/how-to-wear-and-mak...

While at the hospital please remember to:
✅ Use the on-site hand sanitisers provided and wash your hands regularly
✅ Keep to the left on all corridors
✅ Keep 2m apart and follow social distancing advice on site

MELKSHAM TOWN COUNCIL MEETINGS GOING ONLINE

Please share

Melksham Town Council, for the first time ever, is to hold an Economic Development and Planning Committee meeting followed by the Annual meeting of its Full Council, on Monday 1 June, online using the Zoom video conferencing platform.

Councillors will attend the meeting online, supported by officers. Members of the public and press are also invited to attend. The joining details are on the meeting agendas which can be downloaded from the Council’s website at [bit.ly/2M78cNs] and [bit.ly/3gtUwKl]. Where appropriate, members of the public may participate in the meetings, in the normal way, when so directed by the chair.

The two meetings will be held, in sequence, on Monday evening, the first beginning promptly at 7pm. The first meeting is that of the Economic Development and Planning Committee and is expected to be of short duration.

The second meeting is that of the Annual Meeting of the Full Council will begin on the rising of the first meeting.
In another first, the meetings will be live streamed onto Melksham Town Council’s YouTube channel, so that proceedings can be viewed after the event.

The Town Clerk, Linda Roberts said: “whilst current COVID-19 restrictions mean that we have to change the way we operate, we hope that videoing and live streaming council meetings in this manner will make them more accessible to the people of our town and increase interest in and awareness of local governance.”

On the look out for any large print books for an elderly gentleman shielding at home until we can work something out with the Library..........If you can help please quote Large Print Books and email admin@melkshamcommunity.co.uk or text 07557634185. Thank you ...

If you can get him a Kindle you can adjust to print of whatever size is needed.

Obviously the government guidance doesn’t allow the Library service to reopen as yet but we may be able to help - our team will be in touch! Cracking job you’re doing - keep up the great work! 👏

*** SCAM ALERT - FACE COVERINGS ***

People in England should aim to wear face coverings on public transport and in some shops from Wednesday, the UK government has said.

A document outlining the new lockdown rules suggests face coverings are worn in enclosed spaces where social distancing is not always possible.

Demand for products is likely to increase the number of complaints we are receiving relating to face mask scams. Face masks which are designed to prevent the wearer from contracting COVID-19 are classed as PPE and required to meet safety regulations. One Council alone has already seized half a million substandard, illegal face masks. There is also potential for scammers to take orders for products which won't be delivered.

The government advice today relates to a 'face covering'. This is not PPE but an item worn to reduce the risk of an asymptomatic person spreading the virus. The government has also provided advice on how to make your own reusable face covering using an old t-shirt:

To all our fabulous volunteers if you have completed a task please let us know so we can update our records. For example if you are making regular phone calls, walking someone’s dog or doing regular shopping please let us know so we can keep our records up-to-date. It also helps us plan future workloads. We are also starting to look to the future and how this scheme will be managed and remain sustainable when we gradually begin to come out of lock-down. ...

So another week completed and demand for our services remains strong.

Some people are starting to return to work now so the amazing support of our wonderful volunteer team is more important than ever.

We are starting to think about what the service will look like in the months ahead as we enter the "New Normal".

One thing is clear, for those at risk, those shielding, and those who are most vulnerable there will still be a need for a service like this so we are going nowhere.

We may need to reshape our service and explore different ways of delivering it, but we will still be here.

If you are interested in helping to run or deliver the Melksham Community Response in the future then please get in touch. You can email us at admin@melkshamcommunity.co.uk or give us a call on 01225 809265 and ask for Jon.

Shocked and saddened this evening to learn that there are some scammers out there who are pretending to be from the Melksham Community Team or from Melksham Council.

Please be aware that we will never cold call you asking if you want help or offering assistance - we will only respond to requests for support.

All of our volunteers should be carrying a photo ID card and many will be wearing our distinctive T-Shirts.

If you are ever in doubt then please call us on 01225 809265 to confirm that the person who is calling is genuine. Our wonderful volunteers will never be upset that you are double checking.

And for the avoidance of doubt - our volunteers will never ask to enter your home, they will never ask you to pay up front for anything and are under strict instructions to never take a bank card or ask you for any PIN numbers.

We have just hit the magic 1,000 number for incoming calls requesting support the the Melksham Community Support Hub.

That number is one that we can all celebrate. What an achievement!

Whilst none of us welcomes or is enjoying the #lockdown, we can all still feel a sense of pride that together, as a team, we have risen to the challenge and met this need. How these folks would have managed with out you our amazing team of volunteers, in many cases, just does not bear thinking about.
