One year ago our amazing team started taking calls from people who were seeing their lives turned upside down by the Covid 19 pandemic.

When we set up the project we thought it would last for 6, maybe 8 weeks. Now a year on it is firmly established as a long-term project staffed by volunteers and run by Age Friendly Melksham.

In the early days it only happened because of the amazing support of the Clerks at Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council. Working together they put the emergency plan into action and, working with the Area Board and the Age Friendly team set up Melksham Community Support.

There are so many thank yous needed, to the 504 truly amazing local residents who came forward and helped when it was needed, to the frankly fantastic staff teams from the two councils who adapted and changed and learnt the new database system for MCS on the job in the first few weeks and made sure it all happened.

To the Area Board who, without hesitation, said they could put in funding to help us get the project up and running.

To our suppliers who went the extra mile for us - the list is just endless.

There really are not words that can express how it has felt to be part of this project. Whilst I think we all hope and pray that we never have to experience anything like this again, the whole Melksham community can look back at the last year with pride - because we all know that the work done by Melksham Community Support was only the tip of the iceberg.

So many people have done do much to help so many.

What a truly wonderful community we are lucky enough to live in.

Once we have it, we will promote it widely on our website, here on Facebook, and in the local media, so please do not contact us about this at present.
It’s important to note that this type of testing is not something that can be used in isolation, but if used properly with other measures it can be a useful tool at our disposal to help break transmission.

*** SCAM ALERT - CORONAVIRUS VACCINE ***

We are hearing further reports across the country of people being contacted out of the blue with offers of a coronavirus vaccination.
Most recently reports have been received of elderly residents receiving a call to advise that their vaccination would be carried out at their home, and that the caller required their name, address and also financial details to pay for the vaccine.

Other reports relate to approaches made by text and from a recorded voice message on the telephone. In each case the recipient is required to respond by clicking a link in the text message or by pressing 1 when receiving the call. They are then asked to give personal information, as well as financial details to book their vaccination.

THESE ARE SCAMS.

Criminals are exploiting the current situation to attempt to steal personal details and your money.

The NHS is currently offering the COVID-19 vaccine to people most at risk from coronavirus. These people will be contacted by the NHS.

NO PAYMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THE VACCINE.

There has been a surge worldwide of vaccine related phishing email scams. We expect to see an increase in these.

Phishing emails seen have contained malicious files that installed malware, or links to bogus websites to obtain the victim's information.

Protect yourself from vaccine-themed phishing campaigns by checking the email addresses on incoming messages and be alert to hyperlinks that contain misspelled domain names; be aware of highly emotive language designed to manipulate you; do not supply login credentials or personal information in response to an email; monitor key financial accounts regularly; and keep software and apps updated.

Report all scams to us via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.

(Thanks Suffolk Trading Standards for the information)

Timeline PhotosPeople living in the Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire area who are eligible for the coronavirus vaccine should wait to be contacted by the NHS, instead of calling their local hospital or GP practice directly.

The advice comes as the NHS prepares to deliver the first batch of vaccines for Covid-19, which were officially approved for use by the medicines regulator last week and started delivery on Tuesday 8 December.

First in line for the vaccine will be people aged 80 and over, who are already expected to attend hospital, as well as care home staff and the frontline NHS workers most at-risk.

The rollout of the vaccine is a huge logistical challenge, and comes at a time when the NHS is already managing ongoing coronavirus-related challenges, as well as traditional winter pressures. Vaccines are being delivered to the first cohort of 50 hospital hubs across the country who will begin vaccinating patients this week. The Royal United Hospitals, Bath, is prepared to receive and administer the vaccine when it is delivered.

Local people can show their support for the operation by waiting to be contacted with instructions of how to receive the vaccine, while continuing to observe the current social distancing guidance.

The physical process of giving the vaccine will be a marathon and not a sprint, with vaccinations taking place over the next few months.

More information on the vaccine can be found online at www.nhs.uk.
